Sweetwater & Minnie H students join in a Project Aces Celebration

Physical Education Students from Minnie H and Sweetwater Elementary Schools celebrated "National Physical Education Day", May 1, 2002, by taking part in a "Project ACES" celebration.

"ACES" stands for "All Children Exercising Simultaneously".  Devils Lake students joined millions of children from 50 states and 50 countries by simultaneously participating in 20 minutes of physical activity in a symbolic gesture of fitness and unity.

The aim of Project "ACES" is to educate children about the importance of lifelong fitness and the positive impact of exercise on personal lifestyles.  Students were reminded that exercise can reduce the chances of coronary heart disease, which includes high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity.

  • Children who participate in physical education class in school are more active during the entire day than children who do not have physical education class
  • If a person is physically active as a child, he or she will more likely be active as an adult.

Did You Know?!
  • Regular, consistent aerobic exercise can develop the growth of new brain cells.
  • Physical Education is the only curricular area that unites all brain levels by integrating the right and left hemispheres of the brain.
  • Physical activity can help improve student academic performance.
  • Physical Education is the only content area in the entire school that addresses ALL 3 learning domains (Psychomotor, Cognitive & Affective).
  • Aerobic-types of activity can improve short term memory, reaction time, and attention span.
  • Physical activity helps reduce stress and enhances a person's general well-being.

Hug O' War
I will not play at tug o' war.
I'd rather play at hug o' war,
Where everyone hugsInstead of tugs,
Where everyone giggles
And rolls on the rug,
Where everyone kisses,
And everyone grins,
And everyone cuddles,
And everyone wins.
---Shel Silverstein, from "Where the Sidewalk Ends"
